About this role

Northwestern Medicine is seeking an experienced Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to serve as Lead APP within our Neurosurgery department. This advanced practice provider will work a hybrid schedule combining outpatient and inpatient care, with no nights, weekends, holidays, or on-call requirements.

In this lead role, you will provide direct patient care while also coordinating the training, onboarding, and professional development of other Advanced Practice Providers in the program. You will serve as an advocate and voice for APP staff at leadership forums and collaborate closely with department leadership to provide input on APP performance, evaluations, and competency.

Your expertise will influence healthcare decision-making through clinical reasoning, and you will play a pivotal role in quality performance metrics and enhancing patient access. The position supports department growth and development of APP models of care while participating in system-wide quality initiatives and research projects as appropriate.

Onboarding and orientation consist of five 8-hour shifts for 8-12 weeks, transitioning to an option of four 10-hour shifts upon completion. Requirements

  • Current certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
  • Advanced clinical knowledge and ability to manage complex neurosurgery patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Experience in training, onboarding, and professional development of advanced practice providers
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including physicians, nursing staff, and hospital leadership
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to serve as an advocate for APP staff at leadership forums
  • Competency in providing high-quality, cost-effective advanced patient care

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care demonstrating clinical expertise and advanced knowledge as outlined in the APP job description
  • Develop and coordinate APP training, onboarding, and professional development activities within the neurosurgery program
  • Coach, train, and mentor APPs in partnership with collaborating physicians and department leadership
  • Collaborate with department leadership to provide input on APP performance, competency, and annual evaluations
  • Serve as liaison for APPs with clinical department leadership and NM APP leadership, attending APP leadership committees and councils
  • Influence healthcare decision-making through expert clinical reasoning, research, and theory-based practice
  • Play a pivotal role in positively impacting quality performance metrics and enhancing patient access through department and system-wide quality initiatives
  • Participate in clinical trials and research projects as appropriate within the Northwestern Medicine system
