About this role
The Public Health Nurse carries out communicable disease surveillance, prevention, and control measures for the City of Boston. This role investigates reports of communicable diseases, including pathogens of public health importance, reported outbreaks, and emerging pathogen events.
Daily work includes conducting field investigations with home and site visits to implement preventive and control measures. The nurse also provides services at the BMC TB Clinic, including patient assessment, education, medication monitoring, and tuberculin skin testing.
The position supports surveillance and control activities for mass casualty events while collecting epidemiologic data for analysis of communicable diseases. Collaboration occurs with internal teams and external stakeholders such as community agencies and health care providers.
Additional duties involve providing nursing support for vaccine clinics and other division projects. Participation in staff conferences, quality improvement activities, and public health preparedness efforts is expected as part of ongoing division operations.
Requirements
- Licensed to practice as Registered Nurse in Massachusetts.
- BSN or a Bachelor's Degree in a related field required with minimum of two years of clinical or public health experience.
- Eight years clinical or public health experience may be substituted for a BSN or Bachelor's Degree.
- Masters in Public Health degree may be substituted for one year of experience.
- Prior experience working with infectious diseases preferred.
- Demonstrated competency in working with diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic groups.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out responsibilities in the home, community and group settings.
- Current Massachusetts drivers license and own vehicle.

- Assists with surveillance and control activities for mass casualty events.
- Collects epidemiologic data as needed for analysis of communicable diseases within Boston.
- Provides nursing support for CDC Division including vaccine clinics and other projects or activities as needed.
- Acts as a resource for education and outreach to community-based agencies, health care facilities, and other stakeholders.
