About this role

This Senior Community Health Nurse position with the Florida Department of Health provides and coordinates generalized school health services at assigned schools within Sarasota County. The role follows the Sarasota County Schools 10-month academic calendar, offering a unique blend of public health and school-based nursing practice.

In this role, you will manage and coordinate special projects related to School Health as outlined in the local School Health Services Plan. You will provide age-appropriate nursing counseling on topics including smoking cessation, domestic violence prevention, and suicide prevention, working directly with students in a school setting.

You will operate within established protocols and supervisor’s instructions, with adjustable scheduling that may include participating in Department of Health clinics as assigned. The position requires making visits and meetings outside the school setting, and you will attend and participate in staff development activities.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27
  • Possess a nursing multi-state license through the Nurse Licensure Compact
  • Valid Florida driver’s license or the ability to obtain one
  • Knowledge of nursing practice
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and schedule
  • Ability to operate various machines and equipment such as computers, copiers, and fax machines

Responsibilities

  • Provides and coordinates generalized school health services at assigned schools according to the local School Health Services Plan, established protocols, and supervisor’s instructions
  • Manages and coordinates special projects related to School Health as outlined in the local School Health Services Plan
  • Provides age-appropriate nursing counseling on topics including smoking cessation, domestic violence prevention, and suicide prevention
  • Performs other related duties as assigned with adjustable scheduling, including participating in Department of Health clinics as assigned
  • Attends and participates in staff development activities
  • Makes visits and meetings outside the school setting as required
