This as-needed, non-benefited Staff Nurse Oncology role at Northwestern Medicine offers the opportunity to work in a patient-first healthcare environment. In this role, you will perform comprehensive patient assessments via phone or in person, utilizing the nursing process to address chief complaints and patient needs. You will independently carry out routine nursing duties such as phlebotomy, medication administration, and vital sign measurement, while also demonstrating clinical competency in complex specialty procedures including chemotherapy administration and conscious sedation.

You will work collaboratively with physicians, clinical and administrative units, and outside agencies to coordinate appropriate patient care. Strong interpersonal skills are essential for establishing and maintaining effective relationships with patients and the healthcare team, and you will be responsible for initiating and organizing patient education for the oncology population.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Illinois.
  • Ability to use appropriate judgment, independent thinking, and creativity when resolving patient care issues.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians, and clinical and administrative units.
  • Clinical competency in performing complex specialty procedures, including conscious sedation and chemotherapy administration.
  • Experience with patient assessment via phone or in person, utilizing the nursing process to identify patient needs.
  • Proficiency in documenting all nursing assessments and interventions clearly, completely, and legibly in the patient's medical record.
  • Understanding and adherence to protocols and procedures for the release of patient/medical information, maintaining strict patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment and collaborate effectively with other departments and outside agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment, ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and reporting deficiencies to the supervisor immediately.
  • Perform a comprehensive assessment of each patient's chief complaint and needs utilizing the nursing process, and document all findings in the patient's medical record.
  • Independently perform routine nursing duties including phlebotomy, medication administration, measurement of vital signs, and preparation of lab specimens.
  • Demonstrate clinical competency in complex specialty procedures such as chemotherapy administration, inseminations, and filling and adjustment of implantable pain pumps.
  • Interpret and define abnormalities detected in tests and procedures, then take appropriate remedial action and document all interventions clearly in the patient record.
  • Triage and prioritize incoming telephone calls using clinical assessment skills and service standards, managing urgent or emergent medical situations as they arise.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other clinical and administrative departments to coordinate appropriate patient care, and communicate with outside agencies or facilities as needed.
  • Initiate and organize patient education for the oncology population, ensuring all documentation is clear, complete, and legible while maintaining patient confidentiality.
