Jennie Stuart Hospital in Hopkinsville, Kentucky is seeking a supplemental Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner to provide psychiatric evaluation and medication management services on a 12-bed inpatient adult psychiatric unit. As part of the interdisciplinary team, you will work closely with the psychiatrist, nursing and support staff, and social workers to develop appropriate disposition for this population.

Coverage includes unrestricted call for weekdays and weekends as scheduled. Daily responsibilities involve obtaining histories, performing physical examinations, diagnosing and managing acute and chronic health conditions via evidence-based guidelines, and ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies and laboratory tests.

You will prescribe pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, including controlled substances in accordance with state regulations and supervisory agreements. The role also includes performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as suturing, wound care, incision and drainage, splinting, casting, and biopsies within your scope of practice.

This position offers the opportunity to work within a collaborative inpatient team focused on quality care, efficient resource utilization, and reducing patient length of stay. You will also assist with discharge planning, respond to the Emergency Department for evaluations, and participate in community outreach programs.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) in the state of Kentucky.
  • Ability to prescribe controlled substances in compliance with Kentucky Revised Statutes KRS 218A.060–130.
  • Experience providing psychiatric evaluation and medication management in an inpatient setting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team including psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers.
  • Competence in performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within scope of practice.
  • Strong clinical documentation and communication skills for robust patient handoffs and discharge summaries.
  • Willingness to take unrestricted call coverage for weekdays and weekends as scheduled.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain histories and perform physical examinations on adult psychiatric inpatients.
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic health conditions using evidence-based guidelines.
  • Order, conduct, and interpret diagnostic studies and laboratory tests.
  • Prescribe pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, including controlled substances per state regulations.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as suturing, wound care, incision and drainage, splinting, casting, and biopsies.
  • Assist patients to maximize their abilities to cope with health and illness through education and counseling.
  • Plan and coordinate patient discharge and/or transfer, and respond to the Emergency Department for evaluations.
  • Work with the hospitalist team to reduce patient length of stay by performing timely evaluations and advocating for patients regarding system issues.
