About this role
This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by being a competent, respectful, and compassionate professional. The Registered Staff Nurse safely and independently follows Mercy's standards and policies while caring for patients.
In the day-to-day role, the nurse ensures accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, families, and co-workers during handoffs. The nurse demonstrates competent assessment, planning, intervention, coordination, and evaluation skills based on each patient's individual plan of care.
The nurse functions as a role model for current and new staff by creating a healthy work environment to help the unit meet its goals. They direct other licensed and non-licensed personnel in patient care and collaborate effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
Opportunities for growth include providing ongoing education to patients and families and remaining current on evidence-based practice and appropriate protocols. The nurse also follows safety guidelines and promptly reports any unsafe conditions or incidents.
Requirements
- Current RN license in the state of Iowa or compact license.
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
- Demonstrated ability to assess suicide risk and adapt care plans accordingly.
- Proven skills in de-escalating patients in crisis.
- Critical thinking and judgment skills to implement patient plans of care.
- Ability to direct other licensed and non-licensed personnel.
- Effective and age-appropriate communication skills, including understanding nonverbal cues, fears, anxieties, and cultural barriers.
- Competency in patient safety practices and emergency response within scope of practice.
Responsibilities
- Ensure accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, families, and co-workers at handoffs to allow for the best possible patient outcome.
- Demonstrate competent assessment, planning, intervention, coordination, and evaluation skills based on the individual patient plan of care.
- Continually assess patient and family needs to provide quality care based on a patient centered care model.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills and judgment necessary to implement a patient plan of care, nursing interventions, and procedures.
- Maintain accurate and real time documentation of nursing care provided to ensure integration of information for the healthcare team.
- Direct other licensed and non-licensed personnel in the provision of care to patients as assigned.
- Assess and reassess suicide risk per policy, utilizing provided tools, and adapt the plan of care with appropriate interventions based upon assessment.
- De-escalate patients in crisis to prevent acts of aggression towards self and others.
- Provide ongoing education to patients and families.
