About this role

Under the direction of a registered/licensed nurse, the Patient Care Assistant is a member of the interdisciplinary health care team who assists in clinical support functions to promote a safe, compassionate patient care environment in the Special Care Nursery.

Day-to-day duties include performing and documenting vital signs, EKGs, bathing and sanitary needs, transferring and ambulating patients, feeding, and assisting RNs and physicians with exams and treatments. The role also involves specimen collection, equipment retrieval and cleaning, and documenting patient information such as height, weight, fluid intake, and output.

This position is based at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, part of Mass General Brigham—a not-for-profit organization dedicated to patient care, research, teaching, and community service. The environment emphasizes high-performing teams and exceptional care.

Requirements

  • Healthcare experience: 1-2 years required.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS Certification) preferred.
  • Nursing Assistant (LNA - New Hampshire) preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required.
  • Demonstrated typing skills and computer experience required.
  • Ability to multitask and handle stress crisis situations effectively.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient care-related duties and clinical functions as assigned, including point of care, vital signs, EKGs, bathing and other sanitary needs, transferring and assisting with ambulation, and feeding patients.
  • Assist RNs and physicians with exams and treatments as required.
  • Ensure patient rooms are stocked, equipped, and cleaned appropriately as needs indicate and patient volumes change.
  • Perform specimen collection and document all appropriate information.
  • Retrieve equipment from other areas, set up and clean equipment between patient use, and report malfunctioning equipment per policy.
  • Document patient information such as height, weight, intake of fluids and food, output of urine/stool/vomit/other drainage, and blood glucose results.
  • Communicate with nursing staff in an effective and timely manner regarding patient care and patient condition.
  • Receive and direct Medical Staff, personnel, patients, and visitors.
