The nurse is responsible for initiating and organizing patient education for the oncology population, as well as providing pre-attending care. This includes performing comprehensive assessments of chief complaints, seeking solutions, and offering opinions to physicians and other healthcare providers.

  • Ability to use appropriate judgment, independent thinking, and creativity when resolving patient care issues.
  • Clinical competency in performing complex specialty-related procedures, including conscious sedation and chemotherapy administration.
  • Proficiency in performing patient assessments via phone or in person and implementing nursing interventions.
  • Understanding and upholding protocols and procedures for the release of patient and medical information.
  • Ability to document all nursing assessments and interventions clearly, completely, and legibly in the patient's medical record.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment, ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and supervising the appropriate care of medical equipment.
  • Provide pre-attending care by performing a comprehensive assessment of the chief complaint and patient needs using the nursing process.
  • Document all nursing assessments in the patient's medical record, ensuring clarity, completeness, and legibility while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Independently perform routine nursing duties including phlebotomy, medication administration, measurement of vital signs, and preparation of lab specimens.
  • Demonstrate clinical competency in complex specialty-related procedures such as conscious sedation, chemotherapy administration, and wound excision and drainage.
  • Interpret and define abnormalities detected in tests and procedures, taking appropriate remedial action and documenting all interventions in the patient medical record.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other clinical and administrative departments to coordinate appropriate patient care, including outside agencies as needed.
  • Triage and prioritize incoming telephone calls using clinical assessment skills and service standards, managing urgent or emergent medical situations.
