About this role

The Patient Care Nurse Assistant provides compassionate care and support to patients at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. This role serves multiple pediatric departments including Pediatric Cardiac Step Down, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and Hematology/Oncology.

Initial full-time Monday through Friday daytime training prepares new team members before transitioning to evening and rotating shifts. The PCNA completes patient care activities and clerical support as delegated by the RN across assigned units.

Daily work involves direct interaction with patients, families, and the care team in fast-paced pediatric environments. The position requires familiarity with unit-specific equipment while maintaining accurate records and supporting efficient operations on each shift.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with wheelchair, EKG equipment, patient assistive devices, and patient care equipment specific to assigned population
  • Ability to perform duties across multiple pediatric units including step-down, intensive care, psychiatric, and general medicine
  • Compassionate in all interactions with patients, families, and peers
  • Follows established evidence-based prevention guidelines to promote positive patient outcomes
  • Capable of performing both PCNA and administrative assistant functions during a shift as needed

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic patient care tasks as delegated by the RN and assist in implementing the established plan of care
  • Complete patient care activities including ADLs, vital signs, I&O, 12-lead ECG, bladder scan, hygiene, and venipuncture where applicable
  • Provide clerical support and maintain the patient record in written and electronic format
  • Conduct chart audits as directed by the nurse manager and assist with patient data collection and reporting
  • Order supplies for the department and assist with billing functions as needed
  • Facilitate communication and efficient unit operations using verbal, electronic, and written techniques
  • Orient newly hired PCNAs and administrative assistants to unit procedures and equipment
