The Locum Nurse in OR Recovery ensures complete pre-op assessments including surgical checklists and nursing documentation. They receive patients prior to surgery, perform pre-op checklists, and assist in minor surgeries under supervision. Effective recovery of stable patients post anaesthesia is a key focus.

Assist with intubation and extubation in PACU or OR as required. Communicate patient issues and shifting plans with anaesthetist and primary teams. Promptly report unusual findings to the nurse manager or designee.

Perform pain assessments, initiate analgesia, and ensure timely comprehensive nursing documentation. Identify learning needs for patients and families, provide teaching, and maintain a safe environment through infection control practices. Adhere to waste management guidelines and initiate Basic Life Support if needed.

Requirements

Registered Nurse qualification suitable for OR Recovery roles
Proficiency in pre-operative checklists and assessments
Experience assisting in operating room circulation
Knowledge of post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU) procedures
Ability to recognize pre-arrest or arrest states and initiate Basic Life Support
Familiarity with intubation and extubation assistance
Adherence to infection control and safety policies
Competence in safe medication administration and monitoring

Responsibilities

Ensure complete pre-op assessment including the surgical checklist, nursing documentation and physician’s assessment
Receive the patient prior to surgery, obtain report from accompanying nurse and perform pre-op checklist
Circulate and assist as needed for minor surgeries under supervision
Ensure effective recovery of stable patients post any form of anaesthesia
Assist with intubation and extubation of patient in the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and if required in the Operating Room (OR)
Communicate with anaesthetist and primary teams regarding patient issues and shifting plans
Perform pain assessment and initiate analgesia as required
Ensure all specimens are properly labelled and delivered to the lab in a timely manner
